HOSED!

Did you find one of our “hosed” sticky notes? Are you ready for the next gas tax increase? Illinois is among the states which have the highest gas taxes in the nation! When Governor Pritzker doubled the gas tax in 2019 he built in an automatic escalator to go into effect every July 1st. Below is what legislators in Springfield did to you & your family in 2019 that continues to hurt you & your family today.

• Gas taxes are tied to inflation–they now increase every year
• Illinoisans pay an additional 6.25% for every gallon of gas, on top of the standard excise taxes that were doubled in 2019.
• Now Illinois is only behind a couple of west coast states (California, Nevada) whose residents pay both the highest gas prices and gas taxes in the nation.
• For comparison, Wisconsin and Iowa’s gas prices are about 40 cents lower than Illinois’, while Kentucky and Missouri’s prices are about 50 cents cheaper. Indiana’s prices are 30 cents lower.
• Illinois gas stations all along the borders are being effectively put out of business
• The tax increase was part of the $45 BILLION infrastructure law that passed that year
• The new law allows collar counties to raise their gas taxes also, up to 8 cents a gallon
• Illinois majority Democrats and some Republican leaders (Sen. Bill Brady and Rep. Jim Durkin) voted for this
