When Governor Pritzker and the super-majority Democrats doubled the gas tax in 2019 they built in an automatic escalator to go into effect every July 1st. Rising taxes in Illinois, combined with out-of-control inflation across the nation, make it difficult to remain in Illinois.

Below is what legislators in Springfield did in 2019 that continues to hurt you & your family today.
• Gas taxes are tied to inflation–they now increase every year
• Increases are on top of the standard excise taxes that were doubled in 2019.
• Illinois has now moved up to now being the SECOND highest in the nation (second only to California). Illinois was previously the THIRD highest in the nation in 2019 (behind California & Nevada).
• Surrounding states gas prices are ALL lower than Illinois: Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana.
• As a result, Illinois gas stations all along the borders are being effectively put out of business
• The tax increase was part of the $45 BILLION infrastructure law that passed in 2019
• The new law allows collar counties to raise their gas taxes also, up to 8 cents a gallon
• Illinois majority Democrats and some Republican leaders (Sen. Bill Brady and Rep. Jim Durkin) voted for this
